Instructor information

Module leader: Prof. Paolo De Girolamo

Course information

ECTS: 6 credits

Status: Elective

Semester: 3

Hours: 42/18 (lectures/exercises)

Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the fundamental principles of maritime hydraulics and the methods required to analyse met-ocean conditions. Particular attention is given to waves, tides, currents and their interaction with coastal areas. The course also introduces methods for evaluating wave conditions and their application to the planning and design of coastal, port and offshore structures.

Syllabus outline

  • Fundamentals of maritime hydraulics and met-ocean conditions.
  • Winds, waves, tides and marine currents.
  • Linear wave theory and wave propagation.
  • Wave transformation: refraction, shoaling and breaking.
  • Statistical analysis of waves and extreme conditions.
  • Met-ocean conditions for the design of coastal, port and offshore structures.
